iRCalibration Vision Multi-Cal Introduction

Nov 21, 2025

In this video, we’ll go over the fundamentals of IR Calibration Vision MultiCal, a powerful tool designed to simplify and standardize the calibration process between robots or between a robot and a positioner within a multi-group system. Whether you're working with multiple robots or a robot and a positioner, MultiCal offers a streamlined solution that leverages vision sensors to automate data collection.

We’ll walk through what MultiCal is, why it’s beneficial, and what’s required to implement it successfully. You’ll see how this method minimizes human error, streamlines the calibration process, and allows for reusable components across multiple cells. By the end of the video, you’ll have a clear understanding of how MultiCal fits into your automation strategy and how it can improve the accuracy and efficiency of your robotic systems.

Requirements to Use Vision MultiCal:

  • FANUC Core Software version 8.30 or later
  • Multi-group software option
  • IR Calibration VMCal J993 software option
  • Compatible cameras:
    • Basler iPendant USB camera ACA640-20
    • Basler iPendant USB camera ACA640-750 (only on 7DF3 series or version 9.30+)
    • Kawah Monochrome Camera SC130AB/W (requires IR Vision option)
    • Kawah Monochrome Camera SC130EF2 (requires IR Vision option)
  • A target with:
    • Flat surface
    • At least two contours (e.g., circle for size, crossing/parallel lines for rotation)
    • Non-glossy finish to avoid reflection

What You’ll Learn:

  • How MultiCal defines relationships between robots and positioners
  • The role of vision sensors in automating calibration
  • Benefits of using standardized calibration methods
  • How to select and prepare the right target for optimal results
