R-30iB Plus Communications Protocols

Oct 02, 2025

In this Tech Short, explore the communication capabilities of the FANUC R-30iB Plus Controller using software version V9.40P/XX. The video provides a comprehensive overview of how FANUC robots can interface with external systems through a variety of industrial communication protocols. Supported protocols include EtherNet/IP™, PROFINET®, EtherCAT®, DeviceNet™, and CC-Link®, many of which also offer integrated safety features. Non-safe communication options such as PROFIBUS®, Modbus, and OPC UA™ are also available, giving users flexibility depending on their system requirements. These protocols are compatible across all B Plus cabinet types, including A, B, Mini, Mate Plus, and Compact Plus controllers. EtherNet/IP™ can operate as an Adapter, Scanner, or Safety Adapter using built-in ports, and supports remote access and data collection through OPC UA™. PROFINET® offers single or dual-channel operation and supports I-Controller, I-Device, and F-Device modes for PROFIsafe, using a compact hardware board. EtherCAT® functions as a subordinate device and supports Fail Safe over EtherCAT® (FSoE), with configurable I/O sizes ranging from 128 to 4096 points. DeviceNet™ can be configured as either a controller or device, with optional safety integration. CC-Link® and CC-Link® IE Field provide high-speed communication and safety options, though hardware compatibility may vary by controller model. The video also highlights the use of DCS Safe I/O Connect, which is included with all safety-enabled protocols. This feature allows up to 8 bytes of safety input and output for low-level logic programming within the robot’s DCS system. While some protocols require external hardware, others are software-based, offering scalable solutions for a wide range of automation needs. Whether you're integrating safety systems or enabling data exchange, FANUC provides robust and flexible communication options. Future Tech Shorts will explore each protocol in greater detail.
