Configure R-30iB Plus EtherNet/IP™ for Multiple Adapter Connections

Sep 10, 2025

In this Tech Short, we walk through the process of configuring multiple EtherNet/IP™ Adapter Connections between a Rockwell Automation® PLC and a Robot, as well as between two Robots. Building on the foundation from our previous video, where we covered a single Adapter Connection setup, this session expands the concept to demonstrate how to scale your network for more complex automation environments.

We begin by revisiting the Robot-to-Rockwell Automation® PLC configuration. You’ll see how to take the PLC offline, adjust the number of connections, and modify Slot Connection Sizes to accommodate multiple data streams. We’ll rename and match connection parameters between the PLC and Robot, ensuring compatibility in terms of input/output sizes and data formats. Once the configuration is downloaded and the Robot Controller is powered back on, we confirm that multiple connections are successfully running.

Next, we shift focus to Robot-to-Robot communication. Here, we change the connection type from Adapter to Scanner and walk through the setup of multiple Scanner connections. You’ll learn how to input key parameters such as IP addresses, Vendor IDs, Device Types, and Instance values. We also cover how to configure the Adapter side to match the Scanner settings, and how to verify successful communication after cycling power and resetting faults.

Requirements:

  • Familiarity with EtherNet/IP™ Adapter and Scanner roles
  • Access to a Robot and a Rockwell Automation® PLC with EtherNet/IP™ capabilities
  • Prior setup of a single Adapter Connection (see previous Tech Short)

In this video, we’ll cover:

  • How to configure multiple Adapter Connections from a Rockwell Automation® PLC to a Robot
  • How to set up Robot-to-Robot communication using EtherNet/IP™
  • Best practices for slot sizing and data formatting
  • Tips for optimizing network performance and reliability

Whether you're expanding your automation network or troubleshooting existing connections, this Tech Short provides a practical guide to managing multiple EtherNet/IP™ Adapter Connections efficiently. Dive in to learn how to streamline your setup and improve communication across devices.
