Configure R-30iB Plus EtherNet/IP™ Safety to Rockwell Automation® PLC Using Rockwell Automation® FANUC Add-On-Profile

May 10, 2024

In this video, Haresh Moradia, a staff engineer at FANUC America, demonstrates how to configure a FANUC R-30iB Plus Controller for EtherNet/IP™ CIP Safety communication with a Rockwell Automation® Safety PLC using the Add-On Profile (AOP) and a Fixed Date and Time DCS Signature, with V9.40 software. EtherNet/IP™ CIP Safety is supported on all B Plus Controller Cabinets, including A, B, Mini Plus, Mate Plus, and Compact Plus. To enable this feature, Option R713 is required, which includes DCS Safe I/O Connect. Only one safety protocol can be active at a time, excluding others like DeviceNet™ Safety, PROFIsafe®, or Safety over EtherCAT® (FSoE). Port 2 is optimized for EtherNet/IP™ and is recommended for use. The robot must be configured with Host Comm settings on Port 2 and a Class C network (subnet 255.255.255.0). After initialization and power cycling, connectivity to the PLC is verified via ping. In the DCS menu, CIP Safety settings are modified to enable communication, expand I/O sizes to 8 bytes, and switch the Date and Time Signature to Fixed. Adapter connection settings are configured with 4-word input/output sizes and assigned to Port 2.

The robot generates a HEX Signature Number, which is required for PLC configuration. In Rockwell’s software, a FANUC Robot module is created with CIP Safety enabled, matching the robot’s connection and I/O settings. The Fixed Signature Date (01/01/2009) and adjusted Time (1:00 AM) are entered based on Daylight Savings Time (DST) and Safety Network Configuration Tool (SNCT) offset. After downloading changes and placing the PLC in run mode, ownership is reset, and a Safety Network Number (SNN) is issued to the robot. Once validated, the connection runs with 32 ms RPI and full safety communication. The video emphasizes conducting a Risk Assessment and reviewing DCS and EtherNet/IP™ manuals for further guidance.
