Robot Transfer Unit (RTU) Setup

Nov 10, 2025

Setting up a robot transfer unit (RTU), also known as a robot rail, in FANUC’s ROBOGUIDE software requires a few specific steps to ensure proper configuration and animation. In this video, we’ll walk through how to correctly set up an RTU using the M-900iB/700E robot model, which is commonly used on rails and features a unique extended axis setup. This session is designed to help you understand both the hardware and software aspects of the process, with a focus on ROBOGUIDE-specific requirements that differ slightly from real-world robot setup.

We’ll begin by reviewing the amplifier configuration and extended axis settings, including how to add an auxiliary amplifier and define motion parameters. You’ll see how to use the Robot Creation Wizard to build a work cell with the right options, and how to configure the robot’s control settings to support an extended axis. From there, we’ll cover how to import CAD files for the RTU base and carriage, align the rail direction, and attach the robot to the carriage for accurate motion simulation.

This walkthrough also touches on differences in setup for larger robot families like the M-1000 and M-2000 series, including amplifier indexing and fiber optic routing options.

Requirements:

  • ROBOGUIDE software installed
  • Basic understanding of robot configuration and motion control
  • CAD files for RTU base and carriage

What you’ll learn:

  • How to configure extended axis control in ROBOGUIDE
  • How to set amplifier and motion parameters for RTU setup
  • How to import and align CAD models for accurate simulation
  • How to attach a robot to a rail and verify motion direction
  • Key differences in RTU setup for M-1000 and M-2000 series robots

By the end of this session, you’ll be equipped to confidently set up a robot rail in ROBOGUIDE and simulate motion with precision. Sign up to watch and get started with your RTU configuration.
