Handling Unknown Payload with CRX

Aug 07, 2025

In this video, one of FANUC America’s applications engineers, Christian Stevenson explains how to handle unknown payloads with the CRX series of collaborative robots. It is important to understand that the accurate payload data is crucial to successfully operating any collaborative robot. It describes the mass properties of the end-of-arm tooling and the part being handled. Without accurate payload data, errors are likely to occur, as the collaborative safety features may not have been set up properly. To avoid unexpected faults, stops, and even unsafe operation, the accurate payload data must be prioritized. Once the importance of payload accuracy is understood, it is equally important to know how to handle it. If you know ahead of time which parts you will handle, you can go ahead and create separate payload schedules for the different grippers and parts. However, in cases where the parts may vary or are unknown in advance, FANUC’s new payload compensation feature provides a simple solution. This feature is available on all CRX series robots, and the CR-35iB and CR-15iA. It provides the flexibility to temporarily change payload data quickly in real time, while remaining easily accessible to users. Christian provides an in-depth tutorial on how to enable and configure the new payload compensation feature using the CRX Tablet Teach Pendant. He demonstrates how the robot measures payload using the built in force torque sensor and automatically updates the values. This process saves time and increases flexibility for users who frequently work with changing parts or using multiple applications. FANUC’s CRX cobots make collaborative robot setup easier, safer, and more efficient, even when handling varying payloads, thanks to Payload Compensation!
