How To Replace Batteries On An Industrial Robot

Nov 18, 2025

In this video, we will go over the proper steps for replacing batteries on an industrial robot to ensure smooth operation and prevent data loss. This process is critical for maintaining your robot’s performance and avoiding unnecessary downtime.
We will start by reviewing the importance of checking the operator’s manual for details specific to your robot model. For this session, we’ll focus on the M-20iD series and highlight where to find the battery part number and location in the maintenance section of the manual. On this model, the batteries are located on the J1 base, but this can vary by unit.

Before beginning the replacement, we’ll discuss best practices such as taking an All of Above (AOA) backup and an Image backup. These steps provide a quick recovery option if anything unexpected occurs.
We will also emphasize the importance of keeping the controller powered ON during the entire procedure. Losing power can result in the loss of all current position data, which is one of the most common mistakes during battery replacement. Additionally, we’ll cover safety measures like pressing the Emergency Stop button to prevent robot motion.

Next, we’ll walk through the physical steps of removing and replacing the batteries, including how to safely remove the battery case cap, handle the battery housing, and insert new batteries in the correct orientation. Finally, we’ll show how to reattach the case cap properly with the FANUC logo upright.

Requirements before starting:

  • Operator’s manual for your robot model
  • Correct battery part number
